In this section you can find more information on the operations of ADMENTA Italia
The activity of the Azienda Farmaceutica Municipalizzata of Bologna owned by Bologna City Council was set up in 1957 with the inauguration, by Bologna's then Mayor, G. Dozza, of the first Municipal Pharmacy in the town's central square, Piazza Maggiore.
Initially, this central Pharmacy served both as retail outlet to the general public and warehouse supplying hospitals and nursing homes.
In 1964, AFM opened a further eight Municipal Pharmacies. By 1970, these had become 22.
Today AFM S.p.A., together with its 14 Municipal partners, operates of 37 Municipal Pharmacies, 36 Municipal Pharmacies in the city and Province of Bologna and 1 in Savignano sul Rubicone (FC). As well as the retail business, AFM Bologna S.p.A. operates a warehouse that as well as supplying its Municipal Pharmacies, serves a wide range of private pharmacies, hospitals and nursing homes for a total of around 500 customers.
In May 1999 the 79,91% of AFM Bologna has been acquired by ADMENTA Italia S.p.A.
Azienda Farmaceutica Municipale di Cremona S.p.A.
In 1915 the Commune of Cremona acquired the first Pharmacy in Corso Garibaldi in the centre of Cremona (today, Pharmacy no. 1.). In 1917, the company Azienda Farmaceutica Municipalizzata was created. Five years later in 1923, there were 3 Municipal Pharmacies which increased to 9 by 1957. A further six were added during the eighties to bring the number to the current 15.
In 1999, the company became A.F.M. Cremona S.p.A., a joint stock company and in August 2000, an 80% holding was acquired by ADMENTA Italia.
Azienda Farmacie Milanesi S.p.A.
A.F.M. - the acronym for 'Azienda Farmacie Municipali' - became operative in Milan in February 1972, taking over around forty pharmacies which - from 1962 up to that date - had been managed (on the so-called time and materials basis) directly by the Municipality of Milan.
In just a few years the number of pharmacies rose to 86 (including the two dispensaries at Chiaravalle and inside the Milan Trade Exhibition Centre).
The number of pharmacies, the highest in Italy managed by a single company, the substantial penetration of the municipal area, the positioning of the pharmacies (many situated in areas which, at the time, a private pharmacist would not have considered financially profitable for a pharmacy) and their location in the most 'European' metropolis in Italy are the distinguishing features of A.F.M..
From 1994, A.F.M. also managed a warehouse for pharmaceuticals and parapharmaceuticals, subsequently closed down as it was not profitable.
In 2001, following the privatisation procedure, ADMENTA Italia purchased 80% of the shares in A.F.M: a company whose acronym (which now stands for 'Azienda Farmacie Milanesi') has remained unchanged but which has undergone considerable positive innovations.
Farmacie Pratesi Pratofarma S.p.A.
The Prato town administration first started a pharmaceutical distribution service in 1963 with the inauguration of Municipal Pharmacy no. 1 of Via Firenze 405 in an outlying part of town.
1963 saw further growth with the opening of Pharmacy no. 3, while 1974 - when there were already nine pharmacies - was marked by the creation of the operating company, Azienda Farmaceutica Municipalizzata.
With the reform of Italy's national health system in the early eighties, the Hospital Pharmacy (today's Pharmacy no. 12 moved in via Cavour 91/93) was assigned to the Prato authorities and so came under the management of the Municipal Company.
Subsequent years saw slower, albeit steady, growth - Municipal Pharmacy no. 13 of Via Montalese, 450 was added in 1989, Municipal Pharmacy no.14 of Via Pistoiese 647 was added in 1999 , up to 2004 with the opening of Municipal Pharmacy N°15 of Via Cava, 199/a.
In 1996 it became the Azienda Pratese Multiservizi, mandated by the Municipal authorities also to manage the Council's low-cost housing stock of some 600 apartments.
In 2000, the Prato Town Council split these two activities, retaining the real estate management side and placing the management of the pharmacies under a new municipal body called Farmacie Pratesi Pratofarma S.p.A.
In July 2001, Farmacie Pratesi Pratofarma S.p.A has been acquired for the 75% by ADMENTA Italia.
